I am training to run in my first Marathon- The Philadelphia Marathon on Novemeber 22, 2009! I have decided to use the same training guide my sister used for her first marathon- Hal Higdon’s Novice Program. The program is 18 weeks and day #1 starts on July 20th. My plan is to blog about each training day on this page. Long runs are scheduled for saturdays, followed by cross training on Sundays. As the weekend mileage builds up, the weekday mileage also builds with midweek workouts on wednesdays going from 3 to 10 miles. Tuesdays and Thursday are “easy” days, with workouts increasing from 3-5 miles. This training program has scheduled rest days on Fridays and Mondays- before and after tough weekend training. Click Here for a link to the program I am following

and that means…
I QUALIFIED FOR BOSTON!!
I am very happy with my time! I definitely should have started out slower but that is just something I can work on for next time. I knew I was going way too fast in the beginning but its hard to MAKE yourself slow down. You are feeling good and you are excited….and both of those combined make it extremely difficult to slow down!!! Also- I hit a MAJOR WALL at the twenty mile mark…the last 6 were KILLER. Cardiovascularly, I was fine. But my legs just did not want to go any more. I was having all sorts of pain. They felt like lead bricks. At one point I even prayed to my grandmom (outloud cause I am THAT COOL but do not worry no one heard me haha). I was able to stick with it and run along until I finally made it to the finish line (oh by the way… those last .2 take forever to complete… you think you are “right there”…chyeah righttttt). My oldest sister, Danielle, was on her bike following me for the last 6 miles…it was definitely awesome to have someone next to you encouraging you etc. so thank you very much, danielle! I am in a good amount of pain today. I cant really walk very well without looking like an old lady. My sister and I took our dog for a walk today in Philly and she wanted to run SO FAST and we were just limping along trying to pull her back…it was quite the scene haha….
Monday November 9 , 2009: rest
Tuesday November 10, 2009: 4 miles: before setting on this run I was SUPER nervous…I started out at a crawl and when I got to the first big hill I was hesitant to run up it ….so I played it safe and walked up it… I kept it nice and slow for the rest of the run and had no problems with my ankle at all! At one point I was smiling from ear to ear. I wanted to break out into a dance- but I decided that would be a bad idea. haha however…I do not want to celebrate TOO soon… we will see how the rest of the week goes!
Wednesday November 11, 2009: rest
thursday November 12, 2009: 5.5 miles – on the treadmill (pouring rain, windy, and cold outside- was not gonna take my chances and get sick!)- ankle felt strong. run was great.
friday November 12, 2009: 3 mi raining again today- back to the treadmill!
saturday november 13, 2009: 8 miles: decent run…nothing SPECTACULAR. weather was kind of gross and I was kind of tired. but I got it done 😉
Sunday November 14, 2009: cross training: my spinning class: Playlist: lovers in japan (I really need to come up with some new playlists!)
Monday November 2 , 2009: rest
Tuesday November 3, 2009: 5 mile run only ended up running a little more than a mile? I was experiencing shooting ankle pain and decided to turn around and walk home
Wednesday November 4, 2009: 8 mile run ankle pain still present- 20 minutes on the bike, lifting, core work.
thursday November 5, 2009: 5 mile run ankle felt ALOT better today 😉 still want to stay off of it, though— especially since I still had some pain. I decided to do one of my spinning playlists on one of the spin bikes at the gym- granted not as fun as teaching an actual class- but still a lot better than a stationary bike! Still not going to run tomorrow… if my ankle is feeling REALLY good- I may do some bikram yoga?? hmm…
friday November 6, 2009: rest Tonight, I decided to go to Bikram yoga! I havent done bikram since the very beginning of September… it was awesome!! I felt fantastic after I left There was one pose that bothered my ankle only slightly so I decided to opt out of that one…but besides that…it felt great!
saturday November 7, 2009: 12 miles run: 20 minutes rowing on the erg, lifting, core work, bikram yoga!!!
Sunday November 8, 2009: cross training: my spinning class
Monday October 26, 2009: rest
Tuesday October 27, 2009: 5 mile run: since it was raining outside…I ran my 5 miles on the treadmill – I actually felt AWESOME during this run. for the last couple of miles I increased the speed to a pretty quick pace- first time I have felt strong while running in a couple weeks….still a little sick though! After the run I went to yoga class.
Wednesday October 28, 2009: 10 mile run: not a fantastic run. kind of slow and my leggies were tired by the end! especially my quads. looking forward to friday’s rest day!
thursday October 29, 2009: 5 mile run: very nice outside- kind of chilly though. I averaged 8:14/mi. I felt pretty good during this run.. however- my body is definitely screaming for a rest day- thank goodness tomorrow is one! I will take FULL advantage so I am ready for my 20 miler on saturday! OH and I wore my new running shoes today (same as the old ones- GT-Asics 2410s- different color though- gotta spice things up :)) …Love new shoes!
friday October 30, 2009: rest
saturday October 31, 2009: HAPPY HALLOWEEN! 20 mile run woohooo I did it! I was really nervous for this run! Even though I ran 19 miles a couple weeks ago- that didnt really “count” since I was really sick. I was just happy to survive those 19 miles haha…this time I was looking to have a solid 20 mile run- and that is exactly what I had! My garmin stopped working for the last 2 miles but I averaged ~ 8:15/mi. And it was drizzling pretty much the entire time…but it kind of felt good! Half way through the run I started to feel pretty tired and sluggish so we stopped to buy some gatorade (which helped tremendously). It honestly is crazy just how much a little bit of fuel helps you get through a run. anyway- I had a blast during the run but I am definitely looking forward to tapering! For some reason my quads have be screaming this week!!! I need to stretch them out and take it easy in my spinning class tomorrow. Unfortunately tonight I will be on my feet for hours (my friends and I are going to downtown baltimore to celebrate halloween ;))
Sunday November 1, 2009: cross training: my spinning class
Monday October 19, 2009: Cross Training: short bike ride outside followed by level 2 of SHRED
Tuesday October 20, 2009: rest
Wednesday October 21, 2009: 9 mile run: It was BEAUTIFUL outside. perfect running weather. I enjoyed every moment of it. I averaged about 8:27/mi. However, in the last mile I had to walk/run because I had really bad pain in my left knee. I noticed the pain when I was walking up and down stairs after my 19 miler on saturday. Maybe the pain is due to inflammation and not stretching enough? I have no idea…but I will take some anti-inflammatory and stretch. hopefully it will help!
thursday October 22, 2009: 5 mile run/yoga
friday October 23, 2009: rest
saturday October 24, 2009: 4 mile run plus core
Sunday October 25, 2009: 14 mile run and my spinning class
Monday October 12, 2009: rest
Tuesday October 13, 2009: 4 mile run not feeling very well at all today. decided to give myself a break and take off of running. I have not been to yoga in awhile and so I decided to that tonight, instead. I needed it both physically and mentally! still not feeling great, but yoga DEFINITELY helped 😉
Wednesday October 14, 2009: 9 miles: sick; did yoga instead
thursday October 15, 2009: 5 mile run sick
friday October 16, 2009: 2 mile run
saturday October 17, 2009: 19 miles:(ran in boston) Now- let me remind you- the only workout I did ALL WEEK before this run was 2 yoga sessions (not hard ones either) and a 2 mile run. Needless to say, I was nervous! Yeah I was coughing a bit here and there but I made it! It wasnt the fastest splits ever and I sorta died in the last mile…but I RAN 19 MILES…BOO YAA!!! and you wanna know something even better? Luna Bar, Cascadian Farms, and Nantucket Nectars were all at the Head of the Charles…. andddd they were giving out free samples! So half way through the run we took a pit stop and downed a sample of nantucket nectars, took a plastic bag and filled it with FREE mini lara bars and cascadian farms samples (and yes we ran 6 miles home carrying it all!).
Sunday October 18, 2009: rest
Monday October 5, 2009: rest
Tuesday October 6, 2009: 4 mile run: it felt just okay. I was so tired before I even started this run and really had no desire to run… I am just really really stressed out lately with between the massive amounts of school work I have been hit with this week combined with other things going on in my life. I averaged about 8:08/mi. not bad but it just wasnt one of those runs that I truly enjoyed. oh well. and the one thing I need in my life tonight- yoga- i cant go to. I just do not have any time to fit it in. gotta put school work first sometimes!
Wednesday October 7, 2009: 8 miles: the run today went great. it was VERY windy outside but the weather felt wonderful. Not to hot and not to cold and the air was crisp and fallish 😉 My avg pace/mi was 8:10. It was a very enjoyable run!
thursday October 8, 2009: 5 mile run/6:30 yoga:
friday October 9, 2009: rest
saturday October 10, 2009: 12 miles: My parents/sister came to visit me at school and so we stayed downtown at the innerharbor. In the morning, my sister and I woke up to go on our run- 13 miles. What I failed to realize was the fact that the Baltimore Marathon was going on today! and this actually worked out PERFECTLY for us because all of the roads were closed off. We started our run before the marathon started- which was sorta kinda AWESOME because it felt like you were in first place! and when will you ever be able to feel like you are in first place in a marathon?! haha Then they sent off the elite runners- aka the KENYANS. they are just absolutely amazing. How do they do it? I have no idea. But we kept getting comments from people like “YEAHHH you are in second place!!!”. so funny. could you imagine if we were really in second place to the kenyans? hahaha like that would EVER happen in my lifetime. or my next lifetime or the lifetime after that. We ran around Fort McHenry… so pretty! there was a guy rowing his boat (crew) on the water and made me miss my crew days in high school. I had to run 12 miles and my sister had to run 13 but we only ended up running 11 (avg was about 8:15/mi) because my sister was having major problems with chafing and we were getting stuck with where to run once the marathon started getting underway. so we decided to call it a day and head back to the hotel.
Sunday October 11 2009: Cross Training: teaching spinning class 7 PM-8 PM
Monday september 28, 2009: rest
Tuesday september 29, 2009: 4 miles- nice and easy- 8:12/mi average. It was a nice run- enjoyed it mucho! I had every intention of going to the 6:30 yoga class at my gym but I decided to go to Starbucks to get some tea and study instead. I have a lot of work to do tonight (trying to get to bed early so I can run 8 miles tomorrow before class!). I figure I can always do my yoga dvd one morning before class- have not done that in awhile!!
Wednesday september 30, 2009: 8 miles: This morning I woke up early to get my 8 miles in before class. I do not know why but whenever I run early in the morning I wake up before I am supposed to and I always think I slept through the alarm. So when the alarm FINALLY did go off, I immediately jumped out of bed, threw my shirt on, grabbed a handful of cereal, snapped on the ipod/garmin and set out on my run. I took a different path today so that made things exciting! It was definitely nice to get the run “out of the way” early in the morning! THE STATS:Miles: 8; Avg pace: 8:18/mi; Time: 1:06.24; Mile 1: 8:20; Mile 2: 8:15; Mile 3: 8:16; Mile 4: 8:24; Mile 5: 8:16; Mile 6: 8:18; Mile 7: 8:09; Mile 8: 8:26 I was happy with the pace…. consistent (something I have tonsss of trouble with!) and a fairly good pace when factoring in the hills. good job, christina! hahaha
thursday October 1, 2009: 4 mile run and yoga: I was pretty tired and did not really feel like going on a run or doing yoga (gasp!) but I knew if I did it, I would thank myself later. I left my garmin at home today and just ran for the joy of running and let me tell you it was BEAUTIFUL. It smelled like Halloween outside- cmon I know you know the smell. Sort of like a smoking chimney. The air was nice and crisp and at the perfect temperature. I studied calculus before yoga class and then went to my yoga class (which she made 15 minutes longer today for no good reason at all- scoresky!). Yoga was amazing. I loved every minute of it. She read us something about “body image”in the beginning of class (it is love your body week…did you know that?) and then said that there was a study done that proved that yoga increases women’s body image. look at that! how cool, right? I can certainly say that my body image has increased since I started yoga. Not because I look better but because I (a) appreciate my body more- for its capabilities and limitations and (b) I “know” my body better because of yoga
friday October 2, 2009: body flow class!
saturday October 3, 2009: 16 miles:
I was actually pretty nervous for this run! because (a) this is my farthest run yet and (b) last week’s long run was unsuccessful! I set my garmin to 16 and decided to not look at the pace for the entire run. but I must admit…for the first few miles I was thinking- oh no I am running really slow, etc. etc. I decided to stop thinking about everything and to JUST RUN TO RUN. Once I actually did this, I enjoyed the run much much more. as it turned out…my splits for the first part of the run were not slow at all…it was all just in my head haha. I did, however, hit a brick wall with about 3 or so miles to go. My legs were tired and begging me to stop but I knew I had to keep on going! I told myself “Christina…stop your whining!! Holly is running a marathon tomorrow. You can run 16.” haha so thanks for the motivation holly! best of luck to your tomorrow, girl! you will do awesome!!! THE RUNDOWN… Mile 1: 7:56 Mile 2: 7:45 Mile 3: 7:56 Mile 4: 8:03 Mile 5: 7:53 Mile 6: 8:01 Mile 7: 8:04 Mile 8: 7:56 Mile 9: 7:55 Mile 10: 7:45 Mile 11: 7:52 Mile 12: 8:05 AND I SLOWLY BUT SURELY START TO HIT THE BRICK WALL…Mile 13: 8:11 Mile 14: 8:07 Mile 15: 8:18 Mile 16: 8:20 AVG PACE: 8:01/mi Time: 2:08:08
Sunday October 4, 2009: Cross Training: teaching spinning class 7 PM-8 PM: decided to do the Daylight playlist for tonight: class went really well! great workout…it was my longest playlist i have ever made so it was definitely a challenge! the class seemed to really enjoy it too 😉
Monday september 21, 2009: rest
Tuesday september 22, 2009: 3 mile run (indoor track at school gym), yoga class 6:30 pm at school gym
Wednesday september 23, 2009: 7 miles
this morning I got up early to run my 7 miler. Had zero motivation to run…the only motivation I had was to curl back up in my bed and go back to sleep! but I told myself “Chrstina…get your butt out of bed, wash your face, brush your teeth, get changed, run the 7 miles, and you will feel 1000x better.” So I listened to myself and now I feel 1000x better, just like I promised. haha…the stats:avg pace: 8:21 mile 1 8:45 Mile 2 8:23 mile 3 8:00 mile 4 8:32 mile 5 8:24 mile 6 8:09 mile 7 8:17. i was pretty pleased overall! the hills kicked my butt but it felt good in a way haha
thursday september 24, 2009: 4 mile run: I did this after my classes were over (around 3:30- got out of physics lab early….woohoo!) and averaged 8:26 min/mi. the breakdown: Mile 1= 7:59 Mile 2= 8:14 Mile 3: 9:00 Mile 4: 8:30. Although the splits do not suggest it, I actually felt very good on this run! The weather was absolutely GORGEOUS and I took a totally new route- so it made the run pretty exciting! However, I was hit with some of the biggest hills I have encountered by my school to date. I just took them slowly and steadily. Although they significantly decrease my avg pace and hurt like H**, they are good to do and it makes me feel that much better after the run is over. I am thankful, however, that I found the NCR trail to do my saturday long runs at. I could not imagine running up and down hills for 15 miles straight!!
friday september 25, 2009: body flow class! body flow isYoga, Tai Chi, Pilates workout that builds flexibility and strength and leaves you feeling centered and calm. Controlled breathing, concentration and a carefully structured series of stretches, moves and poses to music create a holistic workout that brings the body into a state of harmony and balance.” Today is supposed to be a rest day, but who doesnt need some body flow in their life? This was the first time going to this class for me and I thought it was great! At first I was not too sure about it. but I really liked how different aspects of yoga/tai chi/and pilates were intertwined into the class. Rosina, who has never done yoga/pilates before, really loved this! She was amazed at how energetic she felt after the class. It was cool to see a “newbie’s” reaction to the way yoga makes you feel. We both walked in VERY tired, and walked out full of energy and at peace/calm.
saturday september 26, 2009: 15 miles: All I have to say is OW. Let’s just say my 15 mile run did not go as planned! I had the usual TJ cinnamon raisin english muffin with AB and PB pre-run, drove to theNCR trail, and set out on my run. for the first 7 miles, I felt AMAZING. running felt truly effortless. I was loving life, enjoying the scenery, enjoying the fall weather, enjoying my music. AS SOON as hit the half way mark, however, it felt like someone had taken two knives and jabbed them in my sides. normally when I get cramps, I slow down for not even a 1/4 mi and take slow, deep breathes. but this trick did not work AT ALL. taking deep breathes just made the knife-jabbing pain WORSE. It was honestly agonizing. I was pretty upset/annoyed because my legs were not tired at all and cardiovascularly (is that a word?) I was also fine. It was just this pain that was stopping me. So anyway- for the rest of the run (7.5 miles to be exact) I trudged on like a snail. But atlas, I made it back to my starting point! hey…as forest gump says…SHIT HAPPENS!!!! THE BREAKDOWN: Avg pace: 8:34/mi, Time: 2:10.48, First half Avg- 7:49/mi, Second half avg: 10:42 /mi
Sunday september 27 2009: Cross Training: teaching spinning class 7 PM-8 PM
Monday september 14, 2009: rest
Tuesday september 15, 2009: 3 mile run (indoor track at school gym), yoga class at school gym (felt great)
Wednesday september 16, 2009: 7 miles
thursday september 17, 2009: 4 mile run/ yoga
friday september 18, 2009: rest
saturday september 19, 2009: 10 miles: the weather was PERFECT for running. It was the perfect fall day. I wore shorts and a very thing long sleeved patagonia shirt. Fantastic. I have been having so much trouble with my garmin lately! It takes a mile for it to register that I am running and so the pace for my first mile is always WAY off. So I estimated that our pace for mile 1 was about the same as mile 2….that being said…Here are the stats:Avg pace: 7:58: Mile 1: 7:44, Mile 2: 7:44, Mile 3: 8:03, Mile 4: 8:01, Mile 5: 8:13, Mile 6: 8:18, Mile 7: 8:07, Mile 8: 8:03, Mile 9: 8:02, Mile 10: 7:36 The run was a lot of fun. We ran along the Schuylkill River (which is part of the race course for the Philadelphia Marathon and where I used to row back in high school). Love running along that river! Afterwards my sister and I made green monsters. I think smoothies are my new favorite post-run treat 😉 prerun I had 1/2 a cinnamon roll larabar and a handful or so of kashi cereal. sat well for the run. no fuel was needed during the run since it was only 10 miles. ill use fuel next week though (15 miler).
Sunday september 20 2009: Cross Training: spinning class
Monday september 7, 2009: rest
Tuesday september 8, 2009: 3 mile run/soft yoga– both down at my school’s gym. the run was nice. gradually increased speed the entire time. yoga was simple but really relaxing 😉
Wednesday september 9, 2009: REST
thursday september 10, 2009: Level 1 Bryan Kest Yoga DVD, 6 mile run (Treadmill)
friday september 11, 2009:3 mile run (treadmill)
saturday september 12, 2009: 13 miles:The run was very good! I did experience some technical difficulties, however. At mile 5 I lost complete satellite reception! Thank goodness I was observant before my run….because I remembered seeing this man in a lime green shirt and blue fuel belt start a little before me. I passed him during those first 5 miles but he was only about 100 meters behind me so I waited up for him and kindly asked him how far we had gone. So then I had to reset my garmin for the appropriate mileage….and we were back in action. annoying…but what can you do? needless to say, I do not have EXACT stats on my run…but I do know that my avg pace was between 7:55-8:00…very very happy with that!!!
Sunday september 13 2009: Cross Training: spinning class
Monday August 31, 2009: rest
Tuesday september 1, 2009: 3 mile run/bikram yoga
Wednesday september 2, 2009: 6 mile run (very slow/sluggish/tired feeling)
thursday september 3, 2009: 3 mile run (also very slow/sluggish/tired feeling) I was going to do yoga today as well as on friday (bikram) but I decided to just take a step back and rest up so I am ready to go for the run on saturday. i think im tired from starting up school and being in a whole new schedule and im sure yoga has something to do with it too. decided to just completely rest up tomorrow….not go out at night (I did go out thursday night though) and go to bed early so I can be ready to go for my mileage PR on saturday!!
friday september 4, 2009: rest
saturday september 5, 2009: 12 miles- overall time: 1:36.31 avg pace: 8:03/mile distance: 12 miles. pretty nice paces….would like to work on consistency for next week’s 13 miler, though. but over all- I was very very happy with the run! prerun fuel- TJ’s cinnamon raisin english muffin with pb and banana (maybe should only have half next time? i could feel it during the run! haha) and some sports beans throughout the run.
Sunday september 6, 2009: Cross Training: 40 minutes eliptical and core work
Monday August 24, 2009: rest
Tuesday august 25, 2009: 3 mile run: first run back in baltimore! waited until about 6:30 pm to get this one in. 8:37/mi time: 24:52.33. normally I wouldnt be really really pleased with this pace but there were TONSSSSSS of hills. I felt like it was honestly 3 miles of all uphill work haha. and i havent done hills for a long time since the where I leave (the shore) is basically flat terrain. great run ;)…I also did workout 1 of the bryan kest yoga dvd which was AWESOME by the way. if you are looking for a good yoga dvd- get this one!
Wednesday august 26, 2009: 5 mile run: 8:26/mi time: 42:08.94- why cant i escape the hills!? I guess its a good thing that I am doing some hill training because I know the philly marathon has a good amount of hills…so at least I will be ready for them. This run was really really enjoyable. I woke up at 6 to get it in but it was still dark out so i waited until 6:30. I couldnt sleep the whole night because I was excited to get up and run… strange? you tell me. haha …did yoga dvd again as well 😉
thursday august 27, 2009: 3 mile run- 8:28/mi. 25:22.73. mostly uphill. felt good. drank green juice beforehand- seemed to sit pretty well. also did level 2 of bryan kest yoga dvd.
friday august 28, 2009: 7 mile run and bikram yoga. run was just okay. a bunch of hills again ( i really would like to find a trail for my long runs to avoid the traffic and hills). the hills slow me down alot.
saturday august 22, 2009: rest
Sunday august 23, 2009: Cross Training- Bikram yoga
Monday August 17, 2009: 3 mile run/ vinyssa yoga… 3 mile run went fantastic. I didnt bring along the garmin- i wanted to just enjoy the run. there was absolutely NO pain/tightness in my knee…i was so happy about this 🙂 the stretching, rest day, and aleve seemed to do the trick. i hope tomorrow’s run goes just as well.
Tuesday august 18, 2009: 5 mile run: 8:00 min/mi..39:59.04. felt pretty good. I was REALLY tired when I woke up this morning (@ 6:45) but I am glad that i forced myself out of the bed and out the door. once I started running I felt much better 😉
Wednesday august 19, 2009: 3 mile run & Hot yoga: woke up at 6:45…was EXHAUSTED again. got up anyway and cranked out the three miles (left the garmin at home) it was enjoyable and the weather was not as hot as usual (woot woot!). hot yoga was of course fantastic- hopefully ill be able to go to one more class before i head back to college!
thursday august 20, 2009: REST
friday august 21, 2009: 10 mile run- lets see here…does the word awful describe this run well enough? brutal? horrendous? so many wonderful words to chose from. I had half of my breakfast cookie and some H20 before heading out on the run. I was feeling pretty decent for about 2 miles and then it hit me. it was 7 AM and it was already both hot and humid out. I could feel the breakfast cookie in my stomach and at times could feel it trying to come back up. and although the cocoa tasting breakfast cookie was fantastic while going down- the taste of cocoa in my mouth while running was not so fantastic when it was trying to come back up (okay am I grossing you out now)? I ran 3 miles to my local park- and did a couple of loops around the park. then i spotted a water fountain (hallelejah!!) so i ran (probably faster than I ran for the entire 10 miles) over to the fountain and chugged water. it hink i got a little water happy because on the way home I could feel the water swishing around in my stomach. beautiful. the only “light at the end of the tunnel” so to speak was the sprinklers that I ran through and my music that kept me motivated. I didnt want to walk…whatever i did i did not want to walk. I told myself i can run as slow as i want but I would not let myself walk. a few times I actually said a few things out loud to motivate myself! haha one time i said “come on T, you can do it…keep pushing” and i looked up to a see a lady on her porch looking at me like i had 5 heads. woops…didnt see you there! avg pace: 9:12 time: 1:31:59
saturday august 22, 2009: 3 mile run: had to do this one on the treadmill since it was storming out. felt very nice! started out slow and gradually increased the speed over the run (5.5-8.0 i believe?)
Sunday august 23, 2009: Bikram Yoga
Monday August 10, 2009: REST/ vinyssa yoga
Tuesday august 11, 2009: 3 mile run/Soft yoga (morning) 8:01 min/mile total time= 24:07. felt nice to go a bit easier but ever since the race on saturday the inside of my right knee has been hurting- sort of like its a tight muscle…not sure what that is. better check into that!
Wednesday august 12, 2009: 4 mile run & Bikram yoga: time: 32:16.67 pace:8:03…BRUTAL is the only word to describe this run. it was hot. it was humid. I was exhausted. i am honestly surprised that my pace was as good as it was. i felt like i was running 11 minute miles. i let myself “sleep in” for this run and began at 8:30. not to self: even on your day off of work- wake up at 6 AM to run. the end.
thursday august 13, 2009: cross training…my spinning class this was my last spinning class for the summer (until i get back to school of course) I used Daylight as my playlist- it was 60 minutes total of a workout- my longest class yet. really tough but AWESOME. i had a great summer teaching at my local gym 🙂 so happy that I was given the opportunity to do so
friday august 14, 2009: REST
saturday august 8, 2009: 9 mile run: 1:14:23—8:16/mi. woke up around 5:50 am to get this in before work. it felt decent. for 7 miles.. mile 6 and 7 i picked it up a little too fast and ran out of gas for the last two miles. the muscle in my right knee started to feel tight at the end as well…im gonna ice it and take some alleve today and get my dad to check it out. hopefully its just tight muscle
sunday august 9, 2009: 3 mile run I decided to take a rest day to let my knee (i have pes anserine bursitis) heal up. Instead, im going to spend some time stretching, using the foam roller, taking aleve, and icing 😉 ill run the 3 miles on monday instead.
Monday August 3, 2009: REST
Tuesday august 4, 2009: 3 mile run: I literally had to drag my butt out the door. I was tired and has ZERO desire to run. isnt it funny how some days you cannot wait to get our of bed and run out the door and then others you wake up and say “oh ill run after work” and then when after work comes you say “okay maybe i wont run today and ill just run on my rest day”… this is exactly what i was saying today- but i decided to just suck it up and get out there and run- afterall it was only a 3 miler. Im glad I ran- it wasnt the best run- but i got the run in and now i feel good! We threw in a couple of random sprints (fartleks) during the run…not many though.
Wednesday august 5, 2009: 3 mile run & hot yoga: Today my sister and I woke up and cranked out 3 miles for marathon training (I am not following Hal Higdon’s novice plan for this week to the “T” because I have a 10 mile race on friday- so i had to switch things up!). It went MUCH better than yesterday’s run. For starters, I actually wanted to run. and I felt good doing it. So that is a start. I averaged about a 7:30 pace… I was suprised at this…it didnt even feel like I was going that fast…woohoo! i havent been to yoga in awhile- so it felt absolutely fantastic. Hot yoga is a nice change from Bikram- but Bikram is where my true love is at haha
thursday august 6, 2009: my spinning class- used the pump it up playlist
friday august 7, 2009: REST
saturday august 8, 2009: Captain Bill Gallagher 10 Mile Island Run in Sea Isle City, NJ!!! 1:17:46—7:46 pace
sunday august 9, 2009: REST
Monday July 27, 2009: 6 miles (6:30 AM) + vinyssa (5:30 pm): the run was just okay… avg pace: 8:16 time: 49:42.0… I wanted to take this slow because (1) hal suggests it for the “long runs” and (2) I was still sore from the bike ride on saturday. but honestly I didnt FORCE myself to run at this pace (which is slower than my usual pace)…I felt perfectly fine running at an 8:16 pace- I dont think i could have ran much faster to tell you the truth. I was feeling kind of sluggish and tired. going to vinyssa yoga tonight 🙂
Tuesday July 28, 2009: 3 miles:ran it pretty quick actually (7:26?) but i did not FEEL 100%…. felt sort of sluggish and heavy. I think I am STILL feeling the effects from the bike race! I guess my body is just not used to the distance and speed at which I was biking at! Tomorrow’s bikram followed by thursday’s spinning should leave me with fresh legs for my saturday long run, though! no yoga today because i am taking my grandmom out to eat!
Wednesday July 29, 2009: rest/Bikram Yoga 6:30 pm – 8pm
Thursday July 30, 2009: my spinning class-tough one. went really well though- my sister said it was my best one yet!! i had the most amount of people i have ever had in a class today too! they like me they really like me! YAY!
Friday July 31, 2009: rest
Saturday August 1, 2009: 7 miles time: 57:27.48 pace: 8:12….woke up around 6:0 AM to run this- i was very well rested and ready to go. my oldest sister danielle came along too…we ran with mary for 5 miles of the run but she had to do 9 today so she kept going. it felt nice going at a comfy/slower pace!
Sunday August 2, 2009: 3 miles: avg pace: 8:07 finished in 24 minutes and something? was pretty tired this morning so i liked taking it nice and slow…probably will bring up the pace next week a little? we will see how i feel i guess
Monday July 20, 2009: Rest Day- boy this was a tough one haha– no but seriously now i am very very excited that training has begun! definitely nervous too. I am going to vinyssa yoga class today.
Tuesday July 21, 2009: 3 miles: went very well- felt strong. left the garmin at home so I do not know my exact pace but im guessing it was 7:40ish. went to vinyssa yoga as well- worked on the core- it was really tough!!!!
Wednesday July 22, 2009: 3 miles- avg pace: 7:28 (this is very fast for me!) time: 22:28:53. run felt very good- i am not sure why i was running so fast- maybe i knew i had to be home in time to go to hot yoga? who knows. i only looked down at my garmin at the half way point because i dont want to force my body into a certain pace. im proud that i was able to go so fast though- not including races- this is the fastest i have run! went to hot yoga at 9:30- kicked my buttocks. warrior 1 and 2 and 3 were killing my legs today! still loved it though 🙂
Thursday July 23, 2009: 3 miles- no garmin but it went really well- not as fast as yesterday but still a nice pace. taught spinning afterwards- really good class- tried to take it easy but thats a pretty hard thing to do. and went to vinyssa yoga tonight (awesome class- i love this instructor soo much!). anyway- lots of activity today- made sure i fueled up correctly but next week im going to try to move around my training schedule so im not overloading on the day i have to teach spinning aka thursday
Friday July 24, 2009: rest
Saturday July 25, 2009: cross training: Barbara Cook run-ride-walk event in millville- biking 31 miles (my first bike “Race”!) I had a BLAST! I avged about 18-19 mph for the ride and I did very well!
Sunday July 26, 2009: rest
